Katie Biele, Victoria, Canada

Katy is a Chilean artist living in Victoria Canada. Her work is playful and colorful. She uses mixed media materials like paint and threads, blending both together. Her main inspiration is color and her South American culture.

Have you always wanted to be an artist? What inspired you to start creating?

I didn't want to be an artist, I have a graphic design degree from University, but art has always been in my life and part of me. I never tried to be an "Artist" it just happened and it keeps a natural flow in my life. Since I was a little kid I've been creating art and painting, it's just a part of me, and is my inspiration to see life from another point of view.

Where do you find inspiration?

Most of my inspiration comes from stories, South America culture, indigenous women, gardens, magical places, and travel.

How have you, as an artist, found your creative voice?

I think I have just been doing the work, putting lots of time into my art practice, and I keep trying all the time. I've been painting the same style for a long time, but it's been improving and evolving as I create new works.

What is your typical day like?

I work as a full time artist but also I have a part-time job downtown. So I split my time in my studio and other things. I work long hours in the studio. I start the day with coffee and some reading, podcast to keep me motivated, then check some emails and organize things, but usually most of the time at the studio is working. Also every day I walk by the ocean and just spend time contemplating.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists or creative business people?

There is no overnight success. You have to keep going and be very positive. It's not an easy path, but nothing is easy, just do the work, and practice every day. If you fail that will give you a great lesson and then keep going again.

How do you build community as an artist? How has the creative community helped you grow and share your art?

I use Instagram to share my work and create and follow artistic community, also I joined the thrive group of artists ladies who has help me a lot.

What artists inspire you? Do you have any favorite blogs, artists, or social media accounts that you’d like to share?

I love the work of Ana Teresa Barboza, she is a Peruvian artist. Also Ines Longevial, she is a French painter. And I love Lisa Smirnova- I am a fan!

What are you most excited about right now?

I am excited about the nice weather- it's finally beautiful spring! And I'm excited for my new larger pieces that I am working on, they combine paint and embroidery.
