How To Craft In the New Year

Ready to start a new crafty hobby in 2022? The new year is a great time to dive into learning a new skill- New year, new you, right?


Embroidery is extremely approachable and fun. Think of it as the crafty version of coloring books, but with a needle, fabric, and thread. From mushrooms to mending, and applique to 3D embroidery you're sure to find something fun to try this January! Melissa's workshops make learning a new skill easy and fun. You'll be surprised how quickly time flies by and what you can stitch!


January 20: Virtual Magical Mushroom Embroidery Basics Workshop from 5-7pm PST with Jenny Lemons

Let’s stitch magical mushrooms! Learn to embroider a playful bunch of fungi in this online embroidery workshop with fiber artist Melissa. This two hour, hands-on workshop covers a variety of beginner-friendly embroidery stitches such as the satin stitch, back stitch, reverse chain stitch, long and short satin stitch, and French knot. Each attendee will receive a full kit. Kits are mailed to you and include: a wooden embroidery hoop, mushroom transfer designs, an embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, cream cotton fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions. A recording of the workshop will be available after class. RSVP for this class by January 13 to have your kit delivered in time for class.


January 22: PNW Pendant from 3-5pm at Monster

Calling all pacific northwest lovers! Want to learn how to hand embroider a mountain range landscape pendant? Join Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for an in-person, 2-hour workshop. This hands-on experience includes all the materials you’ll need to create a beautiful hand embroidered pendant. The workshop covers beginner friendly embroidery stitches that include the satin stitch, back stitch, reverse chain stitch, and long and short satin stitch. Each attendee will receive a full kit that includes a pendant, full skeins of DMC embroidery floss, an embroidery hoop, blue pattern fabric, printed instructions, and an embroidery needle. January 23: Winter Botanical Embroidery Basics from 12-2pm PST at A Little Knitty

Let's stitch some winter greenery. Learn a new skill or brush up on an old one with local fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. We’ll cover embroidery basics like the satin stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, French knot, lazy daisy stitch while stitching winter plants in this hands-on, two-hour workshop. Each attendee will receive a workshop kit that includes an embroidery hoop, assorted full skeins of DMC embroidery thread, cotton fabric, winter botanical transfer designs, an embroidery needle, felt, a sawtooth hook, and printed instructions. January 24: Virtual Prickly Pear Earrings from 6:30-8:30pm with Monster

Create your own pair of mini prickly pear cactus earrings in this two-hour hands-on workshop with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. In this virtual workshop, you’ll learn how to transfer a design, create the radial satin stitch, seed stitch, and running stitch, as well as finish your embroidery in the earring setting. Each participant will receive a full kit mailed to their door that includes peach cotton fabric, a beechwood embroidery hoop, an embroidery needle, full skeins of DMC thread, a transfer pen, a pair of earring settings, and printed instructions. January 25: Blooming Wildflowers from 6:30-8:30pm at Monster- Rescheduled for April 21

Let’s create whimsical wildflowers! Learn to embroider a playful bunch of wildflowers in this embroidery workshop with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two hour, hands-on workshop covers a variety of beginner-friendly embroidery stitches such as the satin stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, French knot, lead stitch, and woven picot stitch. Each attendee will receive a full kit that includes: a wooden embroidery hoop, transfer design, sewing pins, an embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, a cream cotton fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions. January 26: Virtual Mindful Mending-Reinforcing Denim from 6-8pm with Spacecraft

Have a pair of jeans wearing thin? Is it the elbows or maybe the thighs? Before your fabric garment gives way, add some structure with reinforcing stitches, known as visible mending. Melissa of MCreativeJ will share how to stitch fun designs or discreet stitches to help your well-worn denim continue to live on. Provide your own supplies for this virtual workshop. January 27: Plants + Shapes Applique Embroidery from 6:30-8:30pm at Monster- Rescheduled for March 28

Let’s mix and match fabric and embroidery! Learn how to applique abstract fabric shapes and plants with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two-hour, hands-on workshop will cover basic applique and beginner-friendly embroidery stitches like the running stitch, satin stitch, back stitch, and button hole stitch. Each participant will receive a full class kit that includes an embroidery hoop, cotton fabrics, full skeins of embroidery thread, embroidery needle, sewing pins, backing materials, and printed instructions. January 30: Positive Plants from 1-3pm at Wyldwood Creative

Let’s stitch a little positivity into our everyday lives. Join Melissa for Positive Plants embroidery, a hands-on beginner-friendly workshop. In this two-hour class we’ll use hand dyed indigo fabric and choose from four phrases ("You are loved", "You are magic", "You are enough", or "You belong here") or create your own to stitch among leaves. Melissa will share how to prep your hoop, transfer your pattern, and use the back stitch, stem stitch, and lazy daisy stitch to create your own positive plant design. All materials for class are included: a wooden embroidery hoop, indigo dyed cotton fabric, full skeins of DMC embroidery thread, embroidery needle, 4 pattern options, transfer paper, felt, sawtooth hook, and printed instructions.
