The thorn couching stitch is a line with Xs or thorns along it. These Xs are used to hold the line of thread in place. . This stitch is part of the couching stitch family. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the thorn couching stitch.

1. Start the thorn couching stitch by bringing the laid thread up through the back of the fabric at the start of the line. The laid thread can be one long stitch of a loose thread on the front of the fabric.

2. Using a second thread, bring the needle up next to the laid thread. Make a diagonal stitch across the laid thread. This creates the first part of the X that will tac down the laid thread.

3. Bring the needle up next to the laid thread on the opposite side of the start of the previous stitch and parallel to the start of the previous stitch. Then make another diagonal stitch across the laid thread. This will create an X over the laid thread and tac it in place. The start of each tacking stitch should be close to the laid thread, whereas the ends of the tacking stitches should be further away.



4. Repeat along the laid thread.

5. When finished, knot the tacking thread on the back of the fabric. If the laid thread is loose, bring it to the back of the fabric and knot it as well.
