Battlement Couching Stitch

Battlement couching is a multi layer couching stitch that builds horizontal and vertical rows of thread on top of one another before they're tacked down. This stitch is part of the couching stitch family. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the battlement couching stitch.

What you'll need to create the Battlement Couching stitch:

• cotton fabric

• embroidery hoop

• embroidery thread

• embroidery needle

• embroidery scissors

Battlement Couching Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. To start the battlement couching stitch, make vertical lines about 1/4 an inch apart. Start the stitch on one side of the shape, then start the next stitch on the side the stitch ended. This will prevent long threads on the back of the fabric.

2. Next, create horizontal lines that overlap the vertical lines. These are also 1/4 and inch apart and are stitched the same as the vertical lines.

3. The next section is now a repetition of the vertical and horizontal lines. These will be made next to the lines that were just stitched and will go over the previous threads, so that they're laid parallel to the first set.

4. Repeat two more times for a total of 4 layers of vertical and horizontal rows.

5. After the last set is stitched, use a new thread to tac down the horizontal and vertical overlaps of the last thread used.
