Jacobean Couching Stitch
The Jacobean couching stitch is similar to the trellis stitch. This stitch makes an open grid that is tacked down in the corners. The Jacobean couching stitch uses an X to tack down the corners, unlike other similar stitches. This stitch is part of the couching stitch family. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the Jacobean couching stitch.

Jacobean Couching Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial
1. To start the Jacobean couching stitch, make grid lines. You can start with the horizontal or vertical lines first. Bring the needle up through the fabric and make a long straight stitch to the other side of the space being filled.
2. On the same side the needle went into the fabric, bring it back up a short distance away. Then make a straight stitch parallel to the previous stitch. Repeat until the shape is filled with stitches made in one direction.
3. Now add the perpendicular rows of stitches. These stitches will be made the same as the previous lines and should also be evenly spaced.
4. Using another thread, bring the needle up in the bottom corner of the grid where the two threads cross. Make a short, diagonal stitch that goes over the horizontal and vertical threads. Move over the the next intersection of horizontal and vertical threads and create another short diagonal stitch. Repeat until you've gone across the row.
5. Go back down the row making short diagonal stitches that cross over the previous diagonal stitches, creating an X at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical lines.

6. Repeat until all of the horizontal and vertical lines are tacked down at their intersections with Xs.
