How to Embroider: Lacing Stitch

Lacing Stitch

The lacing stitch is used to gather fabric along the back of a shape or embroidery to help it lay flat. It's a helpful stitch when creating embroideries for insets like jewelry. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the Lacing stitch.

What you'll need to create the lacing stitch:

Lacing Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Lacing is used to gather fabric around a backing. Think of it like adding laces to your shoes. With the fabric gathered towards the back of your piece (usually with the running stitch), lacing is used to get the fabric to lay flat. Start on one side and bring the needle across to the other side.

2. Slide the needle through the side fabric and out the opposite side, so that the needle stays on the back of the fabric and doesn’t go through the front. This will look like a straight stitch or single satin stitch on the back of the fabric.

3. Repeat, cinching the fabric close to the backing.
