It's that time of year when many people are prepping for back to school. Wether you're getting in the back to school swing of things or just want to learn something new, I can help you with that!
This September, we're diving into the basics of embroidery. On the calendar you'll find classes to learn how to mend your clothing with sashiko, darning, and embroidery. You'll also find workshops to learn basic embroidery stitches in playful patterns like cacti and vegetables. There are even two opportunities to advance your skills and make your embroidery pop off the fabric with stumpwork embroidery. And even better news, one of these events is virtual! So you don't have to be in the Seattle, WA area to stitch with me.
What can you expect with an MCreativeJ workshop? In my hand embroidery and dyeing class you'll enjoy a hands-on workshop with materials provided. You'll learn new skills, techniques, and get to ask all the questions you'd like. Even if you've never tried the craft before, you'll start at the very beginning and be guided through step-by-step. I try to make every class approachable and fun as you learn something new!

September Embroidery Workshops and Events
September 10: Embroider a Vegetable Tote Bag from 6:30-8:30pm PST Swoon City
Learn how to hand embroider a tote bag with vegetable designs perfect for summer farmers market trips. Join for a two-hour, hands-on embroidery workshop. This class will cover beginner-friendly embroidery stitches like the long and short satin stitch, reverse chain stitch, stem stitch, and French knot. All materials will be provided, and you'll be able to choose from a wide variety of thread colors and vegetable patterns to embellish your tote bag.
September 12: Sashiko Style Visible Mending from 10am-12noon PST at Wyldwood Creative
Want to learn how to stylishly mend your clothing? Sashiko is a Japanese mending technique that uses the running stitch to patch and reinforce garments with stylish geometric stitch patterns. In this 2-hour hands-on workshop with fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ you’ll learn how to get started mending your clothing with sashiko. We’ll cover how to design a pattern, reinforce a garment with a patch, prep your thread, create the running stitch, finish your thread, and care for your garment. All materials are provided.
September 24: Succulent Embroidery from 6-8pm at Bellevue Club
Calling all cactus and plant lovers! Learn beginner and intermediate embroidery stitches in this cactus inspired workshop. In this two-hour, hands-on workshop we'll cover an easy design transfer method, how to get started with embroidery, splitting thread, making knots, and stitches such as the back stitch, reverse chain stitch, couching, needle weaving, and more! In class, you will receive a wood embroidery hoop, cactus transfer designs, embroidery needle, your choice of embroidery thread, cotton fabric, and printed instructions. All skill levels are welcome.
September 26: Fall Fashion Fling with the American Sewing Guild Washington Peninsula Chapter
Join Melissa Galbraith for a hands-on workshop on clothing embroidery and visible mending. You’ll learn how to get started with visible mending, different threads and materials to use, and how to mend your specific garments. Mends can be made to look like decorative motifs or be matched to garments. You can bring a garment to class to mend or use practice fabric. Then we'll embellishment with Embroidery. This portion of the workshop covers beginner-friendly embroidery stitches like the long and short satin stitch, reverse chain stitch, stem stitch, and French knot, to create a new look on existing garments. The day long event includes presentations by Jeni Falldine, Achieving Custom Fit with Pattern Alterations, and Tames Alan, Tea and the Revolution.
September 27: Stumpwork Strawberry 3D Embroidery from 10am-1pm PST at Quilting Mayhem
Want to create textural embroidery that pops off the fabric? Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith o MCreativeJ to learn stumpwork with this delightful strawberry design. Stumpwork is a type of textural embroidery that uses padding and wire to create elements that stand away from the fabric creating 3D elements. In this 3 hour class you’ll learn how to make a sculptural strawberry and leaves that stick out from the fabric. We'll cover wire slips and stuffed padding stumpwork embroidery techniques as well as various embroidery stitches. All materials are included. This class is best suited for makers that have stitched before, however all are welcome.
September 28- October 2: Making Zen Free Virtual Retreat
Making Zen is a free five-day virtual event that will help hand stitchers and crafters learn new processes, improve their techniques, and get inspired with a wholistic approach that nurtures their wellbeing. You can up to 30 different hand stitching classes including learning how to create 3D leaves and strawberries from my stumpwork strawberries pattern. The retreat is free or you can purcahse a VIP pass for unlimited access to all workshops.
