Detached Base Woven Picot Chain Stitch
The detached base woven picot chain stitch creates a chain of linked 3D triangles. These are detached from the fabric and can be stitched in/on materials. This stitch is great for creating flowers, scales, or movement in an embroidery. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the detached base woven picot chain stitch.
What you'll need to create the detached base woven picot chain stitch:

Detached Base Woven Picot Chain Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial
1. This stitch creates a chain or linked 3D triangles that are free from the fabric. They can be attached to the fabric or another item later. Use safety pins or short waste stitches to secure the anchor points of the woven picot triangles. The last corner of the first triangle is the first corner of the next triangle in the chain.

2. Start the woven picot using the waste knot at least 4 inches away from the bottom left corner of the woven picot. Come up through the back of the fabric at the left bottom corner. Slide the needle under the top anchor point. Then slide the needle underneath the opposite corner and bottom center anchor points. Pull the thread so that it creates a triangle outline.
3. Next, slide the thread under the top anchor point again. Tug the thread so that it creates a straight line up the center of the triangle.

4. Start weaving the thread through the three straight strands. Do not bring the needle back into the fabric.
5. Once the triangle is filled, loop the thread around the bottom right corner and start on the next woven picot in the chain.
6. After all the woven picot’s are stitched, secure the chain with a slip knot in the bottom right corner of the last woven picot.

7. Then remove the anchor points and cut away the waste knot on the front of the fabric. Do not trim the threads. These long tails will be used to insert the detached base woven picot chain.
