The detached chain stitch is also often called the lazy daisy stitch. This stitch creates a single chain link that looks like a flower petal or tear drop. It can be used for flower petals and to fill in spaces, among other things. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the detached chain / lazy daisy stitch.

1. The detached chain / lazy stitch resembles a flower petal or tear drop. It can be stitched as a single or multiple design. To start, bring the threaded needle from the back of the fabric to the front.

2. Hold the thread off to the side and bring the needle back down through the fabric right next to where the thread is coming out of the fabric.

3. Gently pull the thread until a small loop forms on the front of the fabric.

4. Next bring the needle up from the back of the fabric to the front, going through the loop. Wherever you bring the needle back up will be where the top of the chain is formed. Be sure your loop isn’t twisted, otherwise the loop will also be twisted.

6. To secure the detached chain stitch, bring the needle through the fabric on the other side of the looped thread. This creates a single detached chain stitch.
