October Hand Embroidery Workshops and Craft Events
October 8: Cactus Embroidery Basics at Monster from 6-8:30pm PST
Calling all cactus lovers! Learn beginner and advanced embroidery in this cactus inspired workshop with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two hour, hands-on workshop covers a variety of beginner-friendly embroidery stitches including the back stitch, reverse chain stitch, couching, needle weaving, and more! You will receive a full kit. Kits include: a wooden embroidery hoop, cactus transfer designs, embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, a surprise pattern fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions.
October 9: Embroider a Botanical Cyanotype at UW Botanic Gardens from 6-8pm PST
Embroider your blue era. Cyanotyping is one of the earliest photographic processes that uses sunlight to capture an image and create a blue print. This concept inspired my Cyanotype Botanicals embroidery design. Even if it's not a sunny day, you can still enjoy a gorgeous blue botanical design. Join in creating a faux cyanotype! In this beginner-friendly hand embroidery workshop with author and fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ you'll learn hand embroidery basics and get started creating a blue botanical design. This workshop will go over beginner embroidery basics and stitches such as the split back stitch, leaf stitch, detached chain stitch, and French knot. Class is best suited for ages 12+. No prior embroidery experience is needed. All skill levels are welcome.

October 12: 3D Butterfly Pin Stumpwork Embroidery at Monster from 1-4pm PST
Want to create textural embroidery that pops off the fabric? Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ to learn stumpwork. Stumpwork is a type of textural embroidery that uses padding and wire to create sculptural elements that stand out from the fabric creating 3D elements. In this 3 hour class you’ll learn how to make wire slip butterfly wings. These wings will be moveable and flutter away from the fabric. After stitching the wings, you’ll be able to finish your embroidery in a pin setting to wear. All materials are included. This class is best suited for makers that have stitched before, however all are welcome.
October 12: Intro to Ice Dyeing at Monster from 5-7pm PST
Explore the magic of ice dyeing with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. Learn how to fold and bind fabric to create patterns and designs as well as the playful nature of ice dye. You’ll love playing with different folding techniques and seeing your designs come to life after the ice melts! You will receive four cotton tea towels to create your own patterns and are also welcome to bring additional cotton materials to dye. (just nothing larger than 3x3 ft.) This class can get messy, so please wear clothing you don’t mind getting a little dye on.
October 13: 3D Blooming Wildflower Embroidery at Picket Fence Art Studio from 2-4:30pm PST
Let’s create whimsical wildflowers! Learn to embroider a playful bunch of wildflowers in this embroidery workshop with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two and a half hour, hands-on workshop covers a variety of beginner-friendly embroidery stitches such as the satin stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, leaf stitch, French knot, and woven picot stitch. You will receive a full kit that includes a wooden embroidery hoop, transfer design, sewing pins, an embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, a cream cotton fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions.
October 17: Woodland Napkin Embroidery at Monster from 6:30-8:30pm PST
Bring the woodlands to your table with these embroidered napkins. From flowers to trees and fruits to mushrooms, these forest forage designs are perfect to celebrate spring and summer dining. Join Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for a 2 hour, hands-on workshop stitching your own unique napkins. We’ll cover the seed stitch, stem stitch, detached chain stitch, French knot, and button hole stitch. When you join this class, you’ll also receive a full kit that includes a beechwood embroidery hoop, two white cotton napkins, an embroidery needle, full skeins of DMC embroidery thread, forest forage transfer patterns, and printed instructions.
October 18: Clothing Embroidery at Wyldwood Creative from 6-8pm PST
Cover up stains and small holes in your clothing with hand embroidery. Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for a hands-on workshop. Simply bring a garment to embroider and we’ll provide you with playful nature-inspired sample designs to stitch. This class will cover helpful dos and don’ts of embroidering garments as well as stitches best suited for your individual garment and pattern. Each attendee will also receive an embroidery hoop, thread, needle, and stabilizer to get started. This workshop is beginner-friendly and no prior embroidery experience is required. Attendees will need to bring their own garments to embroider.
October 20: Flower Pocket Clothing Embroidery at Monster from 1-3:30pm PST
Give yourself some flowers! Embellish a bouquet into your pocket. This could be a shirt pocket, pants pocket, or even a dress pocket. Any pocket that needs florals. Join fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for a hands-on, 2.5 hour workshop. She’ll show you how to get started with embroidering your clothing and cover stitches like the stem stitch, detached chain stitch, long and short satin stitch, leaf stitch, French knot, and bullion knot.
A full kit is included with this class and comes with full skeins of DMC thread in various colors, transfer designs, a wood embroidery hoop, an embroidery needle, and printed instructions. Attendees will need to bring their own garments with a pocket to embroider.
October 22: Indigo Pattern Dyeing at Monster from 1-3pm PST
Explore the magic of indigo dyeing with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. Learn how to fold and bind fabric to create patterns and designs with indigo dye. You’ll love seeing the dye change colors, and your designs come to life! Each attendee will receive four cotton tea towels to create their own patterns and are also encouraged to bring additional materials to dye. This class can get messy, so please wear clothing you don’t mind getting a little dye on. If you are bringing additional items to dye, please nothing larger than 3ft x3ft.
October 27: Crazy Quilt a Needle Book at Quilting Mayhem from 10:30am - 1:30pm PST
Looking for a way to store your sewing needles? Needle books are the best way to store all your needles, pins, thread bits, and more! Learn how to machine sew your own book in this class with Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. Melissa’s mom taught her how to crazy quilt when she was in elementary school. And it only took her 4 years to finish her first quilt… Don’t worry, quilted needle books are much quicker to make! This three-hour workshop will cover how to crazy quilt the outside of the needle book, as well as finish it with four inside felt pages. You will get to choose from a wide variety of fabrics to create their own unique book design.
