Thread painting is a variation of the long and short satin stitch. It’s an artistic approach that follow the shape instead of the stitch lines when filling an area with thread. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider thread painting for stumpwork embroidery.

What you'll need to create thread painting for stumpwork embroidery:

• cotton fabric

• embroidery hoop

• embroidery thread

• embroidery needle

• embroidery scissors

• floral wire

Thread Painting for Stumpwork Embroidery Step-by-Step Tutorial

This example uses thread painting on a wire slip for stumpwork.

1. When filling in a shape with thread painting, start at the outermost edge. The shape will be filled in arches, like a rainbow. The stitches along the side of the shape will be angled downward towards the bottom center of the shape.

2. Follow the arch around with the long and short satin stitches. You may need to adjust the angle of the stitches slightly as the shape changes.

3. Once the outermost row is stitched, fill in the rows underneath, working towards the bottom center point. The connecting rows will slightly overlap one another, like how rows of the long and short satin stitch connect.
